Organizations often find that communicating the essence of their purpose in a clear and concise mission statement inspires employees to perform well and also declares the goals of the organization. In short, a mission statement provides the reason for existing.
Have you ever considered creating your own personal mission statement? Each person should have a mission statement for his or her life. Because most of our time is spent in the workplace, aligning a portion your life’s mission with your organization’s mission is often one of the key factors in being successful.
Touted by Stephen Covey, author of “The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People,” the creation of a personal mission statement is an excellent tool for providing direction and can encourage you to think deeply about your life while expanding your perspective, identifying values, clarifying what’s truly important and providing a framework in which to unify an direct all that you do at work and at home.
To begin, follow these six (6) steps when creating your personal mission statement:
List the qualities of the person you most admire.
- Define what it is that you want to have, do and be in life.
- Write your first draft and include the qualities you want to maintain, strengthen or acquire.
- Continue revising and refining to make your statement concise.
- Once complete, place it in a conspicuous place – so that you can see it daily.
- Periodically review, evaluate and stay in touch with your statement.
Mark Twain once said, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”
By completing this exercise, you should hopefully have a better understanding of yourself and provide inspiration and guidance in your life. To test the value of your personal mission statement, ask yourself, “Does this statement inspire me to be the person I was born to be?” Mission accomplished…
