October is National LGBT History Month, an observance that has been recognized for almost 30 years. LGBT History Month was created by a high school teacher in 19941, and it celebrates the history and achievements of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Though LGBTQIA+ Pride Month is celebrated annually in June, LGBT History Month is celebrated in October to coincide with National Coming Out Day, October 112, and to commemorate the first march on Washington for LGBTQIA+ rights3.
Many local and national organizations have resources to commemorate LGBT History Month, including the University of Houston Library System. The University of Houston LGBT History Research Collection is one of the largest LGBT History Research collections in the South, and it is open to visits from the general public (planning in advance is strongly encouraged).
In addition to UH’s impressive LGBT History Research Collection, many other colleges and universities have published LGBT History Month resources, including George Washington University, California State University, The University of Central Florida, and more. The Library of Congress also houses many resources regarding LGBT History Month.
Happy celebrating, Gators!
