November is Diabetes Awareness Month

If you’ve been diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes, HealthSelect participants have access to resources that can help you manage your condition and live a healthier life.

Diagnostic A1c lab tests

In-network diagnostic A1c testing for diabetes is covered at no cost for HealthSelect of Texas participants.  If you’re enrolled in Consumer Directed HealthSelect, you do not need to meet your annual deductible, but coinsurance applies.

No-cost meters and supplies

Participants enrolled in HealthSelect of Texas may qualify for a no-cost glucometer and diabetic supplies, including test strips, lancets and lancing devices, through their prescription drug plan benefits. Consumer Directed HealthSelect participants pay 20% coinsurance for diabetic supplies after they meet their annual in-network deductible.

Care Management

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) care management clinicians are available by phone to provide extra support and guidance for participants with all types of health conditions, including diabetes.  Clinicians can review treatment plans, provide educational content, and help coordinate care among your providers.

Weight Management Programs

Maintaining a healthy diet is an important way to keep your blood sugar in check. Your HealthSelect medical benefits include access to two online weight management programs. If you meet certain eligibility requirements, you can apply for enrollment in Wondr or Real Appeal at no cost to you.

For information and assistance visit HealthSelect/BlueCross BlueShield of Texas website or call a BCBSTX Personal Health Assistant at (800) 252-8039 (TTY: 711), Monday – Friday 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The HealthSelect Prescription Drug Program (PDP) administered by OptumRX now covers the following diabetic strips and supplies:

  • Contour and OneTouch glucometers are available under the Free Glucose Meter Program. These items must be ordered by presenting a voucher at the in-network pharmacy.  Contour and OneTouch test strips, lancets, and lancing devices have a $0 copay at in-network pharmacies for HealthSelect of Texas participants. Consumer Directed HealthSelect participants must meet their deductible before the $0 copay takes effect. Visit HealthSelect Coverage Change for diabetic supplies and glucose meters for full details.
  • Other diabetic supplies covered under the HealthSelect PDP preferred drug list are included in the tier 2 or tier 3 copays.
  • Consumer Directed HealthSelect now covers insulin before the participant meets the annual deductible. To get coverage before meeting the deductible, the participant must fill the prescription at an in-network pharmacy. The participant will be responsible for the copay/coinsurance.

Have questions about the coverage updates?  Call OptumRX customer service toll-free at (855) 828-9834 (TTY: 711) or visit HealthSelect Prescription Drug Program.
